Psoriasis, a skin condition that can be treated

Various factors can influence the appearance of our skin. Very often external factors have a direct effect on our skin and can even change it. Other skin conditions are the result of more specific factors. This is the case of psoriasis.

Let’s start at the beginning: What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Although it can appear anywhere on the body, it most often occurs in zones close to bones such as the elbows, knees or the scalp.

This skin condition is not contagious and tends to affect young and middle aged adults.

The type of psoriasis most common form of the condition is psoriasis vulgaris, which can be easily identified by skin patches that are typically scaly. These scales are also colloquially known as «plaques» and they tend to be pink.

Symptoms of psoriasis

Most outbreaks of psoriasis occur suddenly and without warning. People with this skin condition tend to notice itching. People may also notice the appearance of psoriasis by painful cuts and lesions on the skin that may bleed slightly.

What are the causes of psoriasis?

  1. Genetic factors: Studies carried out have revealed that a genetic component may be one of the leading causes of psoriasis, although the specific origin of the disease is not yet known.
  2. Other causes of this skin condition are infections. These often contribute to the development of the symptoms of psoriasis. The bacteria most often associated with this skin condition are streptococci. 3. Stress: stress caused by too much work or different forms of anxiety can also trigger psoriasis or even make it worse.

How to treat psoriasis?

Although there is no cure for psoriasis, it can be controlled by applying specific treatments to control the condition. The most popular include:

  • Topical substances: most people with psoriasis use creams, lotions and specific ointments.
  • Phototherapy: Sunlight is very beneficial for people with this type of skin condition. Some people even need extra treatments with ultraviolet light. This type of therapy is an essential part of dermatology.

A number of studies have been carried out on psoriasis in recent years. One of the most significant advances made is the recognition of it as a skin disease that not only affects the physical appearance but also the quality of life of those with the condition. Even though it is a chronic disease, it should be treated as soon as it appears, in order to avoid later discomfort.
