During pregnancy, the skin of a woman goes through changes just like her body. The changes of the skin during pregnancy are mainly due to the hormonal load and the strain caused by the increase in size.
The hormones cause a depletion in the secretions of the sebaceous glands which translates to a drier skin. The main change in the skin of a pregnant woman, caused by the increase in size, is stretch marks.
There are different reasons for looking after your skin during pregnancy. The number one reason why you should look after your skin during pregnancy is because of stretch marks. Once they appear, they are very hard to get rid of, therefore it is better to prevent their appearance.
Stretch marks are elongated marks that appear on your skin. First they are pink or violet in colour but with time they become clear until going off-white. To prevent their appearance it is necessary to use some of the products specifically developed for this. These specialised products are mainly intended to increase the elasticity and distension capacity of the skin.
On top of stretch marks which are the most frequent change, some women experience brown or yellowish patches on their skin at the eyes and around the cheeks and nose. This is a case of chloasma, however it is colloquially known as “pregnancy spots”.
Other more frequent changes to the skin during pregnancy are the appearance of red dots with small star-shaped marks. These skin markings are called spider anigomas and usually disappear after childbirth.
Pregnant women should have a lot of patience because the changes to the skin last for the full duration of the pregnancy. Being careful and equipped with the best care for these changes means it will not be impossible to have healthy and cared-for skin.
