High heels and varicose veins: a dangerous liaison

Good weather begins and so does the time to show off those legs and those shoes that are “to die for”, and one of the things that you may worry about are varicose veins.

What you need to know about varicose veins

Varicose veins affect the veins in your legs. Due to different reasons, these veins swell up, expand and become tortous. The symptons which are caused by the varicose veins can go from minor (pain, heavy feeling and swelling), moderate (eczema and dermatitis) to serious (deep-vein thrombosis which could cause pulmonary embolisms).

They mainly affect women and can appear due to genetic factors: if your mother/ father or a grandparent suffers from it or has suffered from it, there is a higher probability that you will also suffer from it.

How are the varicose veins caused?

Mainly, due to poor blood circulation. The varicose veins affect the blood vessels, as with Arteriosclerosis of the legs, intermittent claudication, and erytheme nodosum. It is caused by a malfunction of the valves in the leg veins, which help the blood to make its way to the heart.

They are 4 types of varicose veins:

  • Grade I or varicula varicose viens: sometimes they can be star shaped, and are known as vascular spiders. Generally they are only an aesthetic problem, but be careful, because they can also produce feelings of heaviness and fatigue.
  • Grade II Varicose Veins: they are more visible and start to cause feelings of heaviness and fatigue in the legs, pain, cramp, tingling and heating sensation or stinging.
  • Grade III Varicose Veins: Symptoms gradually increase, and swelling, oedemas and change in the colour of the skin can appear.
  • Grade IV Varicose Veins: areas of eczema and ulcers can appear. You should take care of this last few, as they are difficult to treat and can easily become infected.

Should you forget about high heels then?

No, your desire to dazzle by wearing high heels will still be there, and you shouldn´t simply be tempted to abuse them. Try not to leave them on for more than 9 hours at a time. And after taking them off, we recommend that you keep your legs lifted for a little while, in order to restore the correct blood circulation in the area. It will be enough to put down a cushion and support your legs on there.

As with everything in life, do it in moderation. And when you put on high heels… stand strong with your head held high! And if you fall, at MartiDerm we encourage you to get back up.
